March '13 a Bad Month for Pan Am...

March has been a bad month for Pan Am Railways.

First, 15 tank cars filled with crude oil derailed in Mattawamkeag, ME on March 7th.  Thankfully, only 3 gallons of oil contaminated the area, and this oil was reported to be only residue from the outside of the cars.

Later that same day, eight loaded coal cars derailed in Nashua, NH, two of which were on a bridge.  The Bridge Street grade crossing was blocked for about 40 minutes.  This derailment interested local railfans due to the marooning of Norfolk Southern heritage unit #1070, painted in Wabash livery, in New Hampshire.  That unit finally headed back into Massachusetts on it's way home on March 14th.

Lastly, on March 12th, four boxcars derailed just south of Verso Paper Mill in Bucksport, ME.

Hopefully the rest of March will be free from any more derailments!

Boston & Albany Inspection Locomotive 1907

This is a photo taken in 1907 by Stanley Smith of a B&A inspection locomotive.  Details on the back of the photo state that this is engine #31, later #200, named "The Berkshire".  It was a 4-4-0 scrapped in 1928.  The photo was taken at Beacon Park in Allston/Boston MA.  Ironic, as CSX has recently sold and vacated the yard there, ending any real freight presence in Boston.  It seems the city is more interested in adding college facilities than business and jobs...

Pan Am Oil Tank Cars Derail in Mattawamkeag ME

The morning of March 7th saw 15 tank cars loaded with crude oil derail in Mattawamkeag, Maine.  Thirteen of the cars ended up on their sides.  No injuries were reported, and the only oil that appears to have contaminated the area was from old residue on the tanks themselves, built up during the loading process.  Reports state that there is a possibility of some oil leaking when crews begin the process of putting the cars upright again.
