Rhode Island Police Investigate Rail Theft - TRAINS Magazine

NEWPORT, R.I.—State police say someone stole 32-feet of rail from the Newport Secondary Line in Portsmouth, according to a story in the Boston Globe.

State police Capt. Raymond Studley told the Newport Daily News that the thieves apparently used a cutting torch to remove 22 feet of rail from the south side of the tracks and another 10 feet from the north side of the line during Memorial Day weekend. The Old Colony & Newport Railway uses the Newport Secondary Line, which is owned by the state of Rhode Island. The rail line runs along the shore of Narragansett Bay from Newport to Portsmouth, a distance of 14 miles.

The Newport Secondary Line was built to provide a connection between Boston and Long Wharf in Newport, but it is seldom used. Police say the most recent train was eight weeks ago, when a group of railroad enthusiasts chartered an excursion.
